Ayodhya’s history is rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures, notably the Ramayana, which designates it as the birthplace of Lord Rama. It was once the prosperous capital of the ancient Kosala Kingdom and served as a Buddhist center during the Maurya and Gupta eras. A significant, long-standing religious and cultural dispute centered on the Babri Masjid, built on the site where a temple marking Rama’s birthplace was believed to have stood, ultimately leading to the mosque’s demolition in 1992 and the subsequent legal battle that culminated in the construction of the new Ram Temple.
